Crackdown on Uninsured Vehicles
There are approximately 400,000 uninsured vehicles being driven in Spain.
In the past year, these have been involved in 16,000 accidents at a cost of 40 million euros.
However, from 23rd January, a dozen patrol cars from the traffic division of the Guardia Civil, equipped with a special automatic number plate reading device will instantly detect those vehicles that are driving without insurance.
Those teams will have the power to immobilise the vehicles and impound them as well as fining the drivers 1,500 euros for cars, 1,000 euros for motorbikes and 2,600 for heavy vehicles.
The provinces where the new teams begin monitoring are: Madrid, Toledo, Seville, Granada, Valencia, Badajoz, Zaragoza, Leon, Burgos, La Coruna, Navarra and Asturia.
