Wind Farms Banned in the Strait
The Spanish Government has extended an off-shore exclusion area in the Strait of Gibraltar. Acting on a request from the Junta de Andalucia, it has ordered that there will be no new wind farms off the coast of Zahara or Barbate. A previous exclusion zone has now been extended, prohibiting windmills along the entire Strait of Gibraltar, from Algeciras to Trafalgar. The Government published a study on off-shore wind farms last year, which indicated areas where the installation of the windmills could take place with the Strait being considered the most interesting given the conditions there. Now though the Ministry for the Environment has prevailed there will be a larger exclusion area to protect the thousands of migratory birds which fly between Europe and Africa.
